• A union that asks "How can we help?"

How can we help?

One students see LUSU as an advisor and helpful friend (rather than the beurocratic nightmare it is for many of the uninitiated) they will come and ask for help, advice, money and support. LUSU's first question should be "how can we help?". Not every idea will work, there aren't the fund to make everything happen - but this can't be our starting point. If the idea is sound and of benefit to the students and/or the university and local community, we have to try and make it happen.

My biggest success was the Lancaster District Diversity Festival. Both because it was a hugely successful event, and because the University and LUSU got on board supporting it. Ofcourse the vast bulk of the work was left to Jo Student (i.e. myself and a bunch of amazing volenteers) but the university gave us the money to make our bit (the Diverse Paper) happen and the union promoted the great work our students had done in their annual report. If only the Sabbaticals at the time had asked "how can we help" rather than complaining about the extra effort I was causing them. Without support an encouragement many great ideas from out students will be lost. The Union's first question must always be "How can we help?"
